AWANA Journey Witness Section 6.1 Question 2: How is the Character of God an encouragement for us to
To fully answer this question, one needs to understand the attributes of God. The Attributes of God are so crucial to understand the “Imago Dei” principle more clearly. There are two types of attributes. They are incommunicable and communicable attributes of God. Incommunicable attributes are not shared with humanity and only God can have these attributes. Whereas communicable attributes are shared with humanity. Incommunicable attributes of God include: Holy, Righteous, Eternality, Omni sapience, Omnipotence, Omniscience, and omnipresence, Creator, Transcendent. The communicable attributes of God include: Grace, Justice, Goodness, Mercy, Compassion, wisdom, and goodness. These principles of God are very important to understand because it draws us closer to God. let us tackle the incommunicable attributes of God prior to the communicable attributes of God.
The incommunicable attributes of God are the most important. The most profound incommunicable attribute of God is YHVH. YHVH is most translated as “the eternal one, the existing one.” YHVH is used as “Yahweh or Jehovah.” YHVH was first found in Exodus 3:10-16. This is the story of where Moses encountered God in a burning bush. Moses wondered “What should I say you are?” God answered him and said “I AM who I AM” or “I WILL BE who I WILL BE” What an amazing promise. God is called “the existing one, the eternal one.” How incredible is that? Very incredible.
The Communicable attributes of God are the second important. The most profound communicable attribute of God is Compassion. If one lacks compassion, he is on the road to destruction. When one show compassion and kindness, it can lead to a better friendship and a better life, but sometimes your compassion is not received nicely. Exodus 34:6-7 reveals this promise. Exodus 34:6-7 states, “The Lord passed before (Moses) and proclaimed, ‘The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast Love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” In this verse, God revealed his attributes to Moses so that Moses and the Israelites can pass God’s attributes from generation to generation. So, God showed his attributes so that Moses and us can practice his communicable attributes.
Therefore, understanding God’s communicable and incommunicable attributes can help lead us on a path towards Christlikeness. To understand these, we need to practice reading the Bible daily. Therefore, God’s Characteristics outlined in this article enables us to use our gifts to further God’s Kingdom.
